SBI FreedoM Mobile Banking Application, Registration Procedure and SMS Banking

State Bank of India has introduced Mobile Banking and SMS banking facility for the convenience of its customers to transact from any place. All that you need is a mobile phone with / without GPRS and you must be in a place where mobile network is available. Even you are away from home and your bank, balance inquiries and funds transfers can be made and you can also pay your bills anytime. State Bank FreedoM is also offering various other services through its Mobile Banking offers:
SBI is offering Mobile Banking Service over Application / Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). This is available on java enabled mobile phones (with or without GPRS). Customers have to download the SBI FreedoM application on to the mobile handset from SBI website link at http://mobile.prepaidsbi.com/sbidownloader/downloadapp.jsp. Following are the services available through SBI FreedoM Mobile Banking:
1. Funds transfer (within the bank and outside the bank branches)
2. Request for Cheque book
3. Bill Payment (Utility bills, credit cards, Insurance premium), Donations, Subscriptions etc.
4. Enquiry services (Balance Enquiry / Mini statement)
5. Mobile Top up (Recharge)
6. Interbank Mobile Payment Services (IMPS)
7. Demat Enquiry Service
8. M Commerce (Top up of Tatasky, BigTV, SunDirect, DishTV connections and receive recharge pins for DigitalTV / Videocon d2h, SBI life insurance premiums
Eligibility to avail Mobile Banking: All the Current/ Savings Bank Account holders in P segment are eligible to use mobile banking services. Transaction limit per each customer per day is Rs.50,000/- with a calendar month limit of Rs.2,50,000/- . Users of all the telecom service providers can avail this facility. The Service from SBI is free of charge. But the user / customer has to borne SMS / GPRS cost.
SBI is also offering various Mobile Banking Services through SMS. The SMS Banking is available on all the phones with any network provider. You can avail this facility on a handset with java / non java platform with / without GPRS connection. Customers need not download any application to avail SMS services. Customers have to borne ordinary SMS charges as applicable. You can do following transactions through SMS Banking services:
1. DTH Top up / recharge
2. Balance Enquiry / Mini Statement
3. IMPS- Mobile to Mobile Transfer
4. Mobile Top up
5. Change MPIN

Nokia CEO's letter to employees

Finland-based Nokia faces a key test this week when chief executive Stephen Elop finally unveils a plan to reverse a sharp slide in the fortunes of the world's number one mobile phone maker.

Nokia holds a strategy and financial briefing in London on Friday, two weeks after it reported a 21 percent slump in fourth quarter earnings and Elop promised: "The industry's changed and now it's time for Nokia to change faster."

Engadget has reprinted a copy of the text from an internal Nokia memo from the CEO Elop to the company's employees. Here's over to the letter which several analysts have termed 'brutually honest'.

There is a pertinent story about a man who was working on an oil platform in the North Sea. He woke up one night from a loud explosion, which suddenly set his entire oil platform on fire. In mere moments, he was surrounded by flames. Through the smoke and heat, he barely made his way out of the chaos to the platform's edge. When he looked down over the edge, all he could see were the dark, cold, foreboding Atlantic waters. 

As the fire approached him, the man had mere seconds to react. He could stand on the platform, and inevitably be consumed by the burning flames. Or, he could plunge 30 meters in to the freezing waters. The man was standing upon a "burning platform," and he needed to make a choice. 

He decided to jump. It was unexpected. In ordinary circumstances, the man would never consider plunging into icy waters. But these were not ordinary times - his platform was on fire. The man survived the fall and the waters. After he was rescued, he noted that a "burning platform" caused a radical change in his behaviour.

Iphone 4 comming to India with BSNL

MyMobileScoop, an Indian mobile blog claims to have spoken to a top-level official with BSNL, confirming that iPhone4 could be launched in India with the state-run carrier. What's more, the phone could be in India in less than a month's time! BSNL was one of the first carriers to announce a data-plan for the iPad, even before it was officially launched here. Apples iPad finally in India

Apple is finally all set to launch iPad in India with state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The device is going to hit the retail stores across the country on 28 January. The tablet will be available in Wi-Fi or 3G+Wi-Fi versions through Apple's premium retailers. A media report says the Wi-Fi version of iPad will be priced between Rs 26,000 and Rs 33,000, while the 3G+Wi-Fi version will cost between Rs 33,000 and Rs 44,000. Mobile Number Portability is finally here!

The Prime Minister flags off the nation-wide rollout of Mobile Number Portability on Thursday. But are you still wondering how to access it? Here's all you need to know.

Q. What is MNP?
MNP allows users to retain their mobile telephone numbers even if they switch operators. Once the switching begins, it will also force telecom providers to improve the quality of their services

Q. How can I avail MNP?
Follow 6 simple steps.

Step 1: Send an SMS to 1900 in this format: PORT<space><your mobile number>
eg. PORT 9000000000

Step 2: You receive an SMS that contains a unique porting code

Step 3: SMS this unique code to your preferred operator.
(Note: This code is valid only for a few days. You will have to re-apply if it expires)

 Step 4: Your current operator will contact your new operator. If there are no dues, you will be granted approval

Step 5: You will get an SMS stating the time and date that porting will take place
(Remember, the rulebook says the process should be completed within 7 working days of applying except in J&K, Assam and North-east areas, where it will take 15 working days)

Step 6: After porting is done, await a confirmation SMS from your new operator
(Your phone could be unavailable for about 2 hours when porting occurs)

Q. How much would it cost me?
The cost of porting a number to a new operator is only Rs 19.

Some Recent Figures in MNP world :

Vodafone managed to lure 30,015 subscribers from other networks and lost just 9,267 of its subscribers. Bharti Airtel also ended in the positive with 18,271 new subscribers and only 10,837 leaving. Idea Cellular saw 15,604 subscribers leaving its network and 13,741 coming in. Emerging as the biggest losers, BSNL and Reliance Communications (RCom) witnessed a net loss of 20,000 and 13,500 subscribers, respectively, as on 16 January 2011.


MNP Faces Technical Problems :
After receiving a number of complaints from subscribers, the Department of Telecom has warned operators to implement mobile number portability (MNP) properly or face penalty. Under the MNP system, a subscriber should get a unique porting code (UPC) when requested. This code is required by the subscriber to complete the porting to the operator of his choice. But a top DoT official said, “Some operators have been found to deny the UPC to subscribers and are sending messages like ‘sorry customers, please try after some time' or ‘dear customers, please wait for some time'. Thereafter, operators try to contact the customer for retention. This is not allowed. We have told the operators that UPC generation is not to be hampered under any circumstances.” [Source: Business Line as of Jan 27 2011 ]
